HENDRICKS HEAD LIGHT - Maine

Location: Sheepscot River Entrance
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 43 feet
Year Established: 1829

Hendricks Head Light sits at the entrance to the Sheepscot River on Southport Island, marking a critical approach to Boothbay Harbor. The lighthouse was first established in 1829, making it one of the older lights along the Maine coast. Its distinctive white square tower is attached directly to the keeper’s house, a common design for smaller coastal stations. Over the years, the light helped guide fishing vessels, schooners, and later recreational boats through the rocky waters of the Sheepscot.

The station was automated in the mid-20th century and remains an active navigational aid today. While the grounds are privately owned, the lighthouse is easily viewed from the water and nearby shoreline, and it continues to be a familiar and reassuring presence for mariners entering the harbor.
